The Chargers were a professional American football team based in San Diego, California. The franchise played in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division from 1961 until 2017, when it moved to Los Angeles. During their time in San Diego, the Chargers won one AFL title in 1963 and reached the AFL playoffs five times and the NFL playoffs ten times. The Chargers played in four of the first five AFL championship games, and in the 1966 AFL title game, losing both times to the same opponent, the Buffalo Bills. The Chargers’ only NFL championship appearance was in the 1994 Super Bowl, where they upset the heavily favored Philadelphia Eagles 17–13. F Dean Spanos was the Chargers’ owner since 1984. He made the controversial decision to move the team to Los Angeles in 2017 after multiple failed attempts to secure public funding for a new stadium in San Diego.
