Planxty Irish Music is one of the most underrated bands in the history of traditional Irish music. Started by four young musicians from Ireland – Christy Moore, Donal Lunny, Andy Irvine, and Liam O’Flynn – in the early 1970’s, Planxty re-imagined traditional Irish melodies with modern instrumentation and arrangements. They developed quite a following due to their unique sound, both in Ireland and abroad. Planxty combined traditional instruments like harps and uilleann pipes with acoustic guitar and mandolin and their repertoire included songs in both English and Irish Gaelic. While Planxty disbanded in 1983, their influence can still be heard in Irish music today.
