George Orwell’s classic novel 1984 focuses on the power of a totalitarian government and its effects on its citizens. Through the character of Winston Smith, Orwell explores themes of control, surveillance, lies, and mass manipulation. The Party, which controls the population of Oceania, is led by a mysterious figure known as Big Brother, whose omnipresent face is constantly warning and manipulating citizens. The main tool of oppression is Newspeak, a language that seeks to eradicate any words or ideas that could foster individual thought or rebellion. The Party also uses the Thought Police to enforce its will and keep citizens in check. Despite his fear, Winston is able to resist Big Brother and the Party when he falls in love with Julia and joins the rebel group ‘The Brotherhood’.
