The USS Flasher (SS-249) was a Gato-class submarine in WWII, launched on April 8th 1944 from Groton, Connecticut. Her keel was laid down on November 9th 1943. Having completed eight war patrols, she was the most decorated US submarine of the war and earned her crew seven Navy Crosses and several unit citations. She was the last of the 437 submarines built during WWII. One of the Flasher’s notable events was the rescue of several survivors from an altercation in the Philippine Sea. Additionally, the Flasher was involved in the sinking of the Japanese battleship Yamashiro. Post-WWII, the Flasher operated out of both Pearl Harbor and San Diego. Eventually, she was decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on January 12th 1968, eventually going to be scrapped in Tacoma, WA.
