The Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) is a high speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious landing craft capable of carrying personnel, equipment, and supplies from ship to shore. It was developed by the United States Navy in the 1970s and is used by many navies around the world for amphibious operations and beach assault. The LCAC is propelled by four ducted fans that generate an air cushion which allows it to travel over water and other surfaces including mud, marsh, or ice, at a maximum speed of 40 knots. The ship is equipped with a retractable bow door that allows troops and cargo to rapidly disembark. In addition, the LCAC also has the capability to carry vehicles and cargo, including light tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, and transfer them to shore without capsizing in rough seas.
