Attack Squadron 174 (VMA-174) is a United States Marine Corps fixed-wing attack squadron. The squadron, known as the “Hell Raisers”, is based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 11 (MAG-11) and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3rd MAW). VMA-174 was activated on December 12, 1950 and flew the F4U Corsair until transitioning to the FJ-4 Fury in 1957. Today, the squadron is tasked with providing Close Air Support (CAS) for ground forces and Combat Air Patrols (CAPs) over combat zones while flying the AV-8B Harrier II. VA-174 was one of the first Us Navy Attack Squadrons to operate the TA-7C Corsair II, an all-weather attack aircraft. VA-174, known as the “Hellrazors”, were based out of NAS Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida in 1980. During this time, they had a unique patch and nickname referring to their aircraft’s aggressiveness. The unit also took a special “Hawaiian Shirt” flight in 1980, flying their Corsairs over the Hawaiian Islands dressed in custom-made tropical shirts while on a training mission. Their colorful shirts and antics generated a lot of news coverage and helped popularize the squadron with other units and Naval Aviation as a whole.
