The North American B-25J Mitchell was a World War II era twin-engine, medium bomber used by the United States and other Allied forces. It was produced in large numbers as both a land-based bomber and carrier-capable aircraft. The Mitchell was developed from the earlier B-25H model and featured a heavily modified airframe for improved performance and range. It was powered by two Wright Cyclone radial engines which gave the aircraft a maximum speed exceeding 300 mph. Its armament included up to twelve .50 caliber machine guns and up to 2000 lbs of bombs, making it a formidable weapon in air-to-air combat. The restored aircraft was discovered in Alaska in 1979 and is the only one of its kind in the world. It is the first B-25J restored to World War II colors and markings. The aircraft was named for the crew chief’s daughter, “Betty”. After restoration, the craft made its way to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. With its bright yellow “Hawaiian shirt” inspired nose art it stands out among the other historic aircraft. At the museum, visitors can view the interior and explore the various components to learn about how the aircraft functioned during its service life.
