The 92nd Bombardment Group, also known as the “Fame’s Favored Few”, was an American heavy bomber unit that served during the Second World War. The 92nd was one of the first units in the 8th Air Force to see combat, participating in operations such as the strategic bombing of Germany and its occupied countries. The group was famed for their bravery and tenaciousness during these missions, often flying far more dangerous and punishing operations than other US air groups. Us Air Force B-17g Flying Fortress 42-31713 ‘Snake Hips’ of the 92nd Bombardment Group Hawaiian Shirt has a colorful and proud history. The aircraft flew its first mission on October 20th, 1944, from the US base in Hawaii. This very airplane flew more than 100 missions, earning it the Iron Cross during World War II. After the war, ‘Snake Hips’ underwent restoration and was returned to operational duty, serving as both an exhibit plane and an aircraft for VIP transport. Still airworthy today, this B-17g is preserved at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA, where it wears its Royal Hawaiian Shirt Squadron markings with pride.
