Peter Sallis was a renowned English actor of stage, television, and film. He was best known for his roles in the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine and the Wallace and Gromit animated films. His career spanned six decades, with his last performance in 2012 at the age of 96. He was knighted in the 2017 New Year Honours list for services to drama. Sallis’ career acting began in 1941, including a role in the classic Ealing Studios film Kind Hearts and Coronets in 1949. He was prolific in radio, plays, and TV, where he had early performances in BBC’s comedy series Hancock’s Half Hour and The Army Game. His most memorable performance was as Norman Clegg in the hilarious BBC sitcom Last of the Summer Wine which ran from 1973 to 2010. Peter also provided the voice of the beloved plasticine character Wallace in the Academy Award-winning animated movies Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, The Wrong Trousers, and A Close Shave. Peter Sallis will be remembered for his gentle wit and charm, which will live on through his lasting legacy in British entertainment.
