Led by legendary coach Don James, the Huskies achieved a perfect 12-0 record, and defeated Michigan in the Rose Bowl for the national title. On offense, quarterback Billy Joe Hobert threw for 2,195 yards and 13 touchdowns, while running backs Napoleon Kaufman and Beno Bryant combined for 1,715 rushing yards and 18 TDs. On defense, the Huskies were especially fearsome, finishing the season ranked third nationally in both points allowed and total defense. Linebacker Dave Hoffmann and safety Dana Hall earned All-America honors for their play, while the defensive line of Aaron Pierce, Steve Emtman and Danianke Smith led the charge.
