It was developed in response to the US Navy’s need for an attack aircraft capable of carrying heavy payloads over long distances. The Skyraider was designed to be highly maneuverable and able to take off and land on short runways, making it ideal for missions requiring close support of friendly ground forces. It also featured an impressive array of armament including bombs, torpedoes, rockets, and a 20mm cannon. During the Korean War, the Skyraider was used extensively as a close support aircraft. Later it was modified to carry electronic countermeasures and other defensive equipment which made it invaluable in Vietnam until its eventual retirement in 1968.
