The Hindenburg was a zeppelin airship that operated in Germany during the 1930s. It was the largest aircraft ever built at the time of its launch and the first major passenger airship. The Hindenburg was powered by four diesel engines and had 16 hydrogen gas cells to provide buoyancy. Its main purpose was to transport passengers between Germany, the United States, and Brazil. The Hindenburg was a marvel of engineering of the time, but tragedy struck on May 6, 1937 when it burst into flames and crashed near Lakehurst, New Jersey. Though the cause of the disaster has never been conclusively determined, the event marked the end of the era of airships for commercial aviation.
