The Bristol Beaufort was a British twin-engine torpedo bomber developed and used during World War II. The aircraft was designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, receiving its official designation in February 1939. The Beaufort was derived from the Blenheim light bomber, which was powered by two Bristol Mercury engines producing 1,030 horsepower each. The aircraft was armed with four 0.303 machine guns in the nose and wings and could carry either a 1,000 lb bomb or a Mark XII torpedo (depending on the mission). The Beaufort was used to great effect by the Royal Air Force (RAF) Coastal Command to disrupt German U-boats and supply lines. Because of its rugged design, it was able to operate from rudimentary airstrips, allowing the RAF to launch daring raids into enemy territory. The Bristol Beaufort Mk I L9878 Mw-r of No. 217 Squadron Royal Air Force Coastal Command based at RAF St Eval in Cornwall in the United Kingdom in 1941 certainly stood out, for it was adorned with a large Hawaiian Shirt painted on the nose! This artwork was believed to have been the work of one of the aircraft’s crew members, though his identity has been lost to time, and the story of how he managed to obtain the paint remains a mystery.
